Fruit Smoothie Recipe

I came home today feeling really hot because of the weather. I wanted to cool down and I thought of making myself a smoothie. I LOVE my fruit smoothies. They are healthy, quick to make and a fun way to cool off.

I also have made smoothies for kids at school. They have helped me with making them too. The kids love to make something and then later enjoy it. Here is how I make mine:

What you need:

Frozen or Fresh Fruit.
I like to use frozen because it turns out colder
and I don't need to use ice for it.
You can choose any fruit. I like
to use mixed berries or tropical fruits
(like mango, melon, cantaloupe).

Frozen Yogurt.
You can get plain one or a flavoured
one. I like to use flavoured
to bring out the fruity taste.

Juice.
The best kind of juice to use is
orange, pineapple or cranberry.

You also need a blender and a scoop.

Steps:

Put in your choice of fruit into
the blender. Add enough juice
so that the fruit is all covered.
Blend.

If it is not blending well, add more juice.

Add 4-5 scoops of frozen yogurt
into the mixture. Blend.

You may have to stop after a while and blend again
with more juice. If you like yours a bit thick, like me,
don't add too much juice.

ENJOY!

My recipe does not have a specific number of servings. If I want to make lots, I add lots of fruit, juice and frozen yogurt.

This recipe can be made in the classroom with children. Make sure they are doing it with your help. It involves science, math, language, health and the most important subject: FUN!

Sounds of Language - Tongue Twisters

I remember having competitions with my friends as a young child with tongue twisters. They were so much fun and really got all of us to become experts at tongue twisters. Tongue twisters are part of alliteration which occurs when a group of words with the beginning sound is used. Here are some tongue twisters that I remember as well as found in the book 'Creating Readers' by Pam Schiller. You can always google 'tongue twisters' and will find many pages full of fun tongue twisters to use.

The Baker
If a baker bakes for another baker,
Does the baker who bakes,
Bake the same way as the baker she is baking for?

Activity Connection: Can you write the same rhyme for a teacher, a doctor, an actor?

Peter Piper
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
How many pecks of pickled peppers did Peter Piper pick?

Activity Connection: Try some pickled peppers for snack. Make up a similar tongue twister for another name like Silly Sally.

She Sells Seashells (my most favourite one!)
She sells seashells by the seashore,
By the seashore she sells seashells.

Activity Connection: Put out some seashells with magnifying glasses for the children to explore!

How Much Wood
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
If a woodchuck could chuck wood?

I also found this amazing website that I assume belongs to a teacher. She has taken a picture of a recipe for creating tongue twisters. You can check out her link here:

Play Dough Recipe

I have used this exact recipe every single week while I was teaching at a Readiness Centre for families. My mom has begun to use it every other day as well as she teaches at a daycare. I also gave this recipe to many parents and they loved the clarity of it and how well it comes out. Pictures to come soon!

Ingredients:

1 cup flour
1 cup coloured water (add food colouring to the water)*
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar**
1 tbsp. vegetable oil

Steps:

Mix all ingredients together in a heavy bottomed pot, so it will not scorch.

Cook on the stove pot at medium-high heat, stirring until it clumps together. (This happens very quickly!)

Remove from heat. Dump the play dough out of the pot onto the countertop. Knead as it cools.

You do not need to store it in the refrigerator. You can put it into a container and it is good to know. If it is still very warm, you can also put a paper towel inside the container to soak up the moisture (though I rarely need to do this).

* For a very vibrant colour, you can use the Wilton paste food colouring made for cake decorating which can be found at the Bulk Barn or Michael's.

**Cream of tartar can be found in bulk at the Bulk Barn for a cheaper price than from any grocery store.
